Event reflects company’s growing focus on security in high-performance computing environments
ShorePoint today announced that its Director of Advanced Computing Solutions, Ian Lee, successfully facilitated the 2025 HPC Security Technical Exchange (STX), an annual event he launched in 2023 to bring federal HPC practitioners together. The three-day event convened approximately 70 practitioners from 20 federal agencies for discussions designed to share challenges, identify opportunities, and foster connections across the federal HPC community.
“As HPC systems grow faster and more complex, federal agencies face unique challenges in balancing performance with security,” said Executive Vice President and CSO, Ryan McCullough. “ShorePoint is committed to helping agencies navigate these evolving risks by providing expertise, guidance, and solutions tailored to high-performance computing environments.”
Some of the common challenges facing federal HPC programs include:
- Performance vs. Security: Traditional security models and tools often do not scale to the speed and complexity of HPC architectures, and exemptions are frequently sought for controls that might degrade performance.
- Hardware Supply Constraints: Global demand for AI and HPC capabilities is straining the availability of critical components such as GPUs and hard drives, creating scarcity at the scale and pace federal agencies need.
- Delays in Obtaining an Authority to Operate (ATO): Securing an ATO can take 18 months or longer, leaving high-value computing resources underutilized, slowing innovation, and delaying solutions with national security implications.
“Now in its third year, STX provides an invaluable opportunity for practitioners across government to exchange ideas, share lessons learned, and shape the future of HPC cybersecurity together,” commented Lee. “Feedback from attendees underscores the importance of this kind of open, collaborative environment for driving progress.”
The event highlights ShorePoint’s expanding focus on security in high-performance computing environments. Lee, hired in April, is helping to launch the company’s HPC security practice to provide guidance, strategy, and solutions to federal agencies. He is also a co-author of NIST’s draft SP 800-234, High-Performance Computing (HPC) Security Overlay, expected to be finalized in early 2026.
Lee will attend Supercomputing 2025 (SC25), November 16–21, where he will present key STX takeaways at the Workshop on Cyber Security in High Performance Computing (S-HPC’25) and co-lead a “Birds of a Feather” session, Zero Trust in HPC Centers, with Frank Indiviglio (NOAA) and Ron Bewtra (IQM).
