The Genesis Mission Is a National Treasure. That Makes It a Target.
LinkedIn | July 30, 2026

The Genesis Mission is designed to federate the national labs’ data, models, and compute into a single platform. Like the Manhattan Project decades ago, this landmark concentration of science creates a target for adversaries’ concentration of attention. That reality “deserves as much attention as the science itself,” says ShorePoint’s Director of Advanced Computing Solutions, Ian Lee, in this LinkedIn article.

He draws on the inaugural Genesis Mission Summit (July 22, 2026; Washington, D.C.) to outline the threat vectors created by this ambitious undertaking and why AI-driven HPC changes the security calculus. He makes the case for a security posture built on continuous evaluation that is central to the Mission now, as the platform is still being built.

The Genesis Mission has a Security Problem
Washington Technology | June 18, 2026

The DOE’s Genesis Mission is moving faster than the security model built to support it. HPC security was built for air-gapped, perimeter-heavy environments with small, vetted user bases, not for systems talking to AWS, cloud AI models, and autonomous agents.

In this op-ed, ShorePoint’s Ian Lee sounds the alarm, outlining four specific risks:

  • Federated identity and access management across trust domains
  • Software supply chain exposure in AI and HPC workloads
  • Gaps in threat detection as the user population expands, and
  • Federal frameworks still catching up to exascale AI realities.

He also outlines what federal HPC stakeholders should be doing right now to catch up, before the window closes.

Before You Can Ask the Question, You Have to Own the Data: Lessons from DOE’s NLIT 2026 Panel on Trusted AI and Classified Data
OrangeSlices | June 9, 2026

Federal national laboratories hold decades of irreplaceable classified data that AI could make accessible for the first time. But realizing that potential requires confronting hard realities about data quality and governance that no architecture solves on its own. ShorePoint’s Ian Lee draws on the 2026 NLIT Summit to examine what leaders must address before sophisticated AI infrastructure can deliver, and why the organizations willing to do that foundational work first will have a meaningful advantage.

NIST SP 800-223 and 800-234: A Turning Point for Federal HPC Security
Federal News Network | May 5, 2026

For decades, federal high-performance computing systems have operated under an uncomfortable reality: the very controls that make IT systems secure can cripple the performance that makes supercomputers valuable. As federal investments in the Genesis Mission and other HPC programs accelerate, so do the cybersecurity risks. NIST SP 800-223 and SP 800-234 mark a significant step toward closing a long-standing standards gap, introducing the first purpose-built guidance for securing complex, large-scale HPC environments. Now leaders have both the framework and obligation to meet the scale of federal HPC ambitions.
