ShorePoint’s Co-founder and CEO, Matt Brown, joined a panel of GovCon executives at the GovCon Advisory Board’s Built to Last: Driving Long-Term Value Through Organic Growth event on September 16. Panelists shared insights on the growth paths available to businesses today. The event drew small business owners, growth leaders, and other professionals from across the government contracting industry.

“It was an excellent turnout and a genuinely impressive group of peers in the room,” said Brown. “What stood out to me was how many of us are focusing on the same goal: scaling the business without losing what made it successful in the first place.”

A strong emphasis during the discussion was on culture: how to keep and maintain it as the company grows. As businesses scale, some lose the special culture, differentiated capabilities, and customer relationships that founding team members brought to the company. That risk only grows as roles shift and when new leaders join the team.

One key topic explored was moving from working “in the business” to working “on the business,” shifting from being deeply immersed in the day-to-day operations and delivery to dedicating more time to strategy, business development, leadership, talent, and long-term company goals. This transition can be the crux of developing a company that can continue growing without relying too much on the founding team members or other key professionals.

The panel also discussed how a company’s trajectory can shift with inorganic growth, such as acquisitions, or with bringing on a private equity partner. Each can open doors to more resources and accelerate growth, but both also bring changes to business operations, decision-making, resource allocation, and how priorities are defined.

The event reinforced that creating an organization that’s built to last involves more than just pursuing growth. What matters just as much is being intentional about what will carry the business forward: culture, leadership, strategic priorities, and capabilities.
